I’ve find this module quite difficult as it was at first hard to set my own brief for the first time. Therefore I decided to create an animated ‘short’ which would look at character animation. I decided to use a hand drawn technique which I enjoyed however found it to be a long but rewarding process. I think the final piece is ok however, I would have like to have been able to fine tune it all and put in sound, which I intend to do at a later date however unfortunately I ran out of time before the deadline. I am very happy with the new skills I have learnt such as rotoscoping and very much looking forward to improving these skills over the summer.

Evaluation of Final Animation

I found this project quite difficult at the beginning, however, as I began to research and started to create ideas I got really into this project. From early on after finding out that britains tradition dish ‘Fish and Chips’ will be no more I decided that my animation will be set within a Fish and Chip Shop. From this point the project really began to move forward. Settling on the idea of the calendar I could then really focus on what I wanted the animation to say, other important points that I found in my research were, overfishing, extinct fish, Cod being extinct within 25 years and 40,000 people will loose there jobs. So I then focused on these points and formed the animations which were then placed on to the calendar.

Then it was time to think about showing the setting and getting it across quickly so I looked at lots of pictures of fish and chips shop interiors. I’ve always had an interest with working within 3D spaces and I thought that this would be the perfect opportunity to try it out. Therefore I created the flat net vectors in Illustrator and then transfered them too After Effects, now this was the hardest part trying to fit the flat paths especially as I’ve never done it before. Once I’d got them together I began to insert spot lights to try and get a realistic look. With everything in place I then began to use cameras to pan and zoom around. Finally I added shadows, and made the glass and chrome ‘shiny’ to create a finished look.

I’ve really enjoyed creating this animation and I am looking forward to creating more 3D spaces I would really like to figure out how to create 3D curvy objects rather than ‘box’ shapes. I’m really happy with the finished result, the only problem is it that its 15 seconds long and not 10 seconds however, without the beginning zoom and with a slight cut of the end slide the calendar on its own in 10 seconds

Final Fish and Chip Shop Interior

Here are some screen shots of the final set. Inside the fish counter are now shelfs and battered fish, the calendar is featured on the back wall, the name of the fish and chip shop is now on the Menu and also to finish off I have made a picture and placed it on the wall.

I’m really happy with the final look of the interior of the fish and chip shop, for the final set I added spot lights, and also set layers which are shiny such as glass and chrome metal so they accept light.

Calendar For Inside the Fish & Chip shop

Here is the new designed calendar which will fit on the back wall of the fish and chip shop, the 3 miniture animations will be set on to here as shown. This way will work much better, the calendar will be done as a composition first and then will placed on to wall in the fish shop afterwards.

3D Spaces and Objects

I have decide to try and attempt to create a 3D Space for my fish and chip shop, therefore I will build up the walls and floor as vectors in Illustrator and then build it up in After Effects, I will do the same with the fish counter as well.

Putting them together proved to be quite difficult as sometimes the objects looked like they were together and then from another angle they wer actually no where near each other….. Luckaly I managed to work it out, I then experimented with lights and cameras in after effects here are some screen shots of my results.

I was really happy with the result for my first ever attempt, however from doing this I realised that it will be easier to animate on the calendar if it was flat, and therefore perhaps attached to the wall…

Witty names for Fish and Chip shop??

Rather than my fish and chip shop just being called Fish & Chip shop, I have decided to call it a ‘witty’ name.

Ideas are as follow

My favourite is Curl up and Fry, as it is a pun on Curl up and Die, as the fact that fish are dying is part of the problem.

Re-working images.

By using tones of colour and gradients within my vectors they already look more interesting then the previous shown.

This image will be used for job losses, also rather than using stick men i would like to try and include a more humanly form.

This image will replace the over fishing from previously I think the difference is really shown here as all the vectors are the same however, with the use of gradients there is alot more depth and warmth to the image.

Tado, was recommended to me as I tend to work primarily in vectors. The images are all full of life I particularly like the one which only uses one colour but uses patterns for detail instead. There is a beautiful use of gradients, contrasts and patterns which work together really well giving the vectors a real warmth to them.
